Ironman 70.3 Geelong rescheduled due to lockdown

Just over a week ago we were excited to report on the exciting field that was set to race at the first professional Ironman race of 2021 – Ironman 70.3 Geelong in Australia.

Today we’ve learned that the event that was scheduled to take place on Feb. 21 has been postponed to March 28, 2021. Geelong is about 75 km outside of Melbourne and is the second-largest city in the state of Victoria. Today, according to Ironman’s update page, the Victorian Government announced that there will be a state-wide lockdown for five days starting at midnight tonight.

The new date is “subject to final written approvals from key stakeholders that we expect to receive within the week,” according to Ironman.

Ironman Taiwan postponed

Ironman’s update page also reports that Ironman Taiwan, which was scheduled to take place on March 21, 2021 “cannot take place as originally scheduled” due to “guidelines and precautions as mandated by the Penghu County Government in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

No new date has been announced for the race in Taiwan. 

Taiwan has a COVID-19 case count that most other countries in the world would envy – it is reported that the country has had 937 cases with nine deaths.
