World Triathlon just announced that Aviles, Spain will host the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships in November. The event that was originally to take place during the ten-day World Triathlon Multisport event in Almere (The Netherlands) had to be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions that wouldn’t allow an event of this scale. Instead, the event will now take place on Nov. 6-7 in the Spanish city Aviles. The race won’t only attract elite athletes as U23, juniors and age groupers are welcome to compete for the world title.

It’s not the first time that Aviles will host the World Triathlon Duathlon Championships. In 2016 South Africa’s Richard Murray and Britain’s Emma Pallant claimed the world title at the event. Spain has proven been a popular destination for the duathlon World Championships having hosted the race in 1997 (Gernika), 2011 (Gijon), 2014 (Pontevedra), 2016 (Aviles) and 2019 (Pontevedra).
