American Ben Kanute will return to see if he can defend his title and take a fourth win at the famous Escape from Alcatraz triathlon race on August 15 in San Francisco. Other big names announced in the pro field include 2016 Ironman 70.3 world champion Holly Lawrence (GBR), last weekend’s winner of Ironman 70.3 Boulder Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR), seven-time Ironman champion Ben Hoffman (USA) and two-time Xterra world champ Bradley Weiss (RSA).

“Escape is one of my favorite races and this year, it is even more special since it is the 40th anniversary for the race and my family will be there with me,” said Kanute. “I am looking forward to testing myself on the challenging course and against my competitors again this year while going for a fourth straight win.”

Lawrence is another former winner of the event – she took the Alcatraz title in 2016.

In addition to the impressive pro field there will be 2,000 amateur athletes on hand to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the race that includes a 2.4 km swim from Alcatraz Island to the Marina Green shoreline, a 30 km challenging bike through the Presidio and a 12.8 km trail run to Baker Beach with the famous Sand Ladder with more than 200 steps.
