During a press conference for this weekend’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship, Ironman CEO Andrew Messick mentioned to consider the possibility of moving the Ironman World Championship to a location outside Hawaii. Last month, Ironman already announced that the World Championship would be postponed from October 2021 to February 2022 due to the strict COVID-19 measurements in Hawaii. Even for February, the situation is uncertain, though.
“We’re exploring every option. That includes potentially taking the race out of Kona,” Messick stated. “There’s no sense of when those decisions will be made,” he continued. Whether it would be a one-time move or if the Ironman World Championship will – just like the Ironman 70.3 World Championship – be organized in a different location every year, remains unclear.
