Australia was supposed to host the World Triathlon Multisport Festival in 2022, but due to travel restrictions, the event, which was supposed to take place in Townsville, has been cancelled. With that in mind, the World Triathlon 2022 Cross Triathlon and Duathlon World Championships are heading to Transylvania next year – they are slated to take place in Targu Mures, Romania from June 6 to 12, 2022.

Transylvania, which is known as the home of Dracula (thanks to Bram Stoker’s novel), is located in the Carpathian Mountains and is renowned for its gothic castles and spectacular scenery. Targu Mures hosted the 2019 Multisport European Championships and the European Duathlon Championships in 2019 and 2021. The European Cross Triathlon Championships were held there in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Last year the Multisport Festival was supposed to take place in Almere, The Netherlands, but in the end only the long-distance and the aquabike championships were held in the city just outside of Amsterdam. The 2021 cross championships were moved to El Anillo, Spain, while the duathlon worlds were held in Aviles, Spain.

“Targu Mures is one of the best places to race in Europe, and we are delighted to go back to Transylvania, this time for the Cross Triathlon and Duathlon World Championships,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “For us having hosts that offer a combination of great experience, dedicated team and welcoming cities is just perfect. I am sure that triathletes, friends and families will feel absolutely at home racing there.”
