The Battle at the Front
The tone was set right from the opening heat. During the swim, a massive pack of thirteen countries stayed together, but it was during the run that the first major selection was made. Italy and the United States launched an aggressive attack, breaking away from the field to take an early lead.
The drama intensified in the second heat. Canada and the United States managed to break clear of the field, establishing a commanding 22-second lead over Italy, who had to mount a chase.
By the third heat, Team USA went on a massive solo offensive during the bike leg, widening their lead to around thirty seconds over the chasing pack, which consisted of Switzerland, Italy, Canada, and France. However, the gap proved unsustainable. The American advantage evaporated as the chasing pack successfully reeled them back in, setting up a dramatic final showdown.
Italy Triumphs in the Final Leg
The race was ultimately decided in the fourth and final heat. France, Italy, the United States, and Canada entered the second transition (T2) neck-and-neck, leaving the final run to determine the podium.
On the run, Italy proved absolutely dominant. They pulled away from the competition to cross the finish line first with a winning time of 1:22:17. Canada finished second 8 seconds behind and France finished third 18 seconds behind.
