The organization has not yet released the identity of the athlete, but according to local media, it concerns a triathlete who was only 25 years old.
The statement released by Ironman is remarkably brief:
“We are saddened to confirm that an athlete racing Ironman 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz has passed away. The athlete was extracted from the swim course by emergency personnel upon which urgent medical care was administered on site.
We share our deepest condolences to the family, friends , and loved ones.”
Ironman 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz was won by Damien Le Mesnager and Natalie van Coevorden.
