After more than two decades in the sport and 13 years as a professional, Australian triathlete Sam Appleton has announced he will hang up his race suit at the end of the 2026 season. The 36-year-old serial winner – boasting 20 career victories, primarily across the middle-distance circuit – shared his emotional decision on social media, signalling the beginning of the final chapter of his elite athletic career.

Appleton’s journey began as a 13-year-old junior with TriNSW, setting off a spark that quickly transformed a hobby into a lifelong calling.

“I did my first triathlon when I was 13 years old, and from that moment, triathlon became so much more than a sport to me; it became my life, my identity, and the thing I wanted to give everything to,” Appleton shared in his announcement on Instagram. “I don’t think I can fully express in this post what triathlon has meant to me over the past two decades. It has given me more than I ever could have imagined.”

Dominance and Consistency

Throughout his career, Appleton built a reputation as one of the most consistent and formidable middle-distance racers in the world. His career is headlined by dominance at two signature events:

  • Ironman 70.3 Santa Rosa/Vineman (California): Claimed four titles across five appearances (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019).
  • Ironman 70.3 Geelong (Australia): Securing victory three times (2017, 2018, 2022) alongside two runner-up finishes (2015, 2020).

On the world stage, Appleton repeatedly proved himself against the very best. He delivered an exceptional stretch at the IM 70.3 World Championships, securing four consecutive top-10 finishes between 2016 and 2019. His crown jewel performance came in 2017, where he placed 4th behind triathlon icons Javier Gómez, Ben Kanute, and Tim Don.

“From racing as a 13-year-old junior for TriNSW to competing in some of the most competitive races in the world, I have achieved far more than I ever thought possible in this sport,” he noted. “At the heart of it all, I simply wanted to explore the limits of my potential.”

Looking Ahead: Bucket-List Races and a New Chapter

While his professional racing era is winding down, Appleton isn’t stepping off the course immediately. He plans to tackle “one or two bucket-list races” before fully stepping aside, with details to be announced soon.

Though his exact future remains open-ended, the Aussie star confirmed he intends to stay involved in the triathlon community that defined his life for so long.

“Retiring from professional racing doesn’t mean triathlon will ever stop being part of who I am,” Appleton concluded. “I still hope to be around triathlon in one capacity or another as I move past professional racing. I love this sport way too much to ever be too far away from it. What a ride it has been.”
