South Africa’s Jamie Riddle and Great Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown stormed to victory at the Ho’Ala Swim, officially kicking off the Ironman World Championship week in Kona.
Due to jellyfish in the waters, the traditional 3.8-kilometer swim course was shortened to 1.9 kilometers, creating a fast and tactical race right from the start.
In the men’s event, Jamie Riddle delivered a stellar performance, clocking a winning time of 23:16. Riddle held off a fierce charge from his competitors, being closely followed across the line by Jonas Schomburg, who took second in 23:18, and Marten van Riel, who rounded out the podium in 23:20. The high-caliber top ten also featured standout international triathletes including Vincent Luis, Antonio Benito Lopez, Wilhelm Hirsch, Sam Laidlow, Jan Stratmann, Jack Sosinski, and Caleb Noble.
The women’s race delivered an absolute nail-biter, with Great Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown ultimately taking the crown. Taylor-Brown crossed the finish line in 26:30, securing a razor-thin victory just ahead of New Zealand’s Hannah Berry, who finished second in 26:31. Regon Hollioake completed the women’s event in 26:35. The rest of the elite women’s top ten featured Imogen Simmonds, Milan Agnew, Lisa Perterer, Daisy Davies, Pamella Nascimento De Oliveira, Grace Thek, and Tamara Jewett.
