Xterra cancels race in Morocco four days before event, athletes on site already

This Sunday, Xterra Morocco was supposed to take place, but that race has been cancelled just four days before the event. Due to last-minute revoked permits, the race cannot take place. This is extra sad for a large group of athletes who had already arrived at the race site.

The relevant permits were reportedly revoked because a ‘safe conduct of the event’ could not be guaranteed. “The unexpected cancellation of Xterra Morocco is equally disheartening for both the Xterra organization and all participating athletes. Our Xterra EMEA team has worked tirelessly over the past 24 hours to find a solution. However, in the absence of guarantees regarding the safety of the athletes, we must acknowledge and respect Souss Triathlon’s (LOC, ed.) decision to cancel the event.”

“Once Xterra has fully understood the situation and reached an agreement with Souss Triathlon, the affected athletes will be contacted directly to provide more information on event registration fee refunds and any follow-up actions,” Xterra said.

In particular, the fact that the cancellation came at the very last minute and was not communicated earlier is causing Xterra a lot of criticism. Many triathletes are already on site, others on the road and still others had already booked their travel.
