Seven months without a triathlon and a recent DNF at the Barcelona Marathon, but Sam Laidlow has officially rediscovered his form: he has just claimed victory at Ironman 70.3 Valencia. The closing stages turned into a thriller as Lasse Nygaard Priester closed the gap, but Laidlow held his ground, fending off the German to secure the win.
A Dominant Lead from the Saddle
For Laidlow, it was a long and largely solitary day at the front of the race. While a large lead group formed during the swim – led by Sven Thalmann in 22:30 – Laidlow didn’t wait long to make his move. Of the fourteen men who exited the water together, the Frenchman broke away early on the bike, watching his lead grow rapidly.
By the time he reached T2, Laidlow held a commanding lead of 4:06 minutes over the chasing trio of Valdemar Solok, Johannes Vogel, and Lasse Nygaard Priester.
The Final Sprint
During the half marathon, Laidlow maintained a solid pace, but Nygaard Priester was charging, consistently clocking kilometers significantly faster and gaining more than ten seconds per kilometer at times. With 15 kilometers down, the German had whittled the gap to just 1:43 minutes. Given the pace differential, it appeared the final kilometers might lead to a photo finish.
While the closing stages were indeed tense, Laidlow’s victory was never truly in jeopardy. The Frenchman crossed the finish line in 3:33:56, followed by Nygaard Priester in 3:35:02. German athlete Fabian Kraft rounded out the podium, taking third in 3:38:02.
