Italian triathlete Mattia Ceccarelli proved absolutely untouchable today at Ironman Klagenfurt. Taking an early solo lead in the race, he never looked back and secured a spectacular victory. With this dominant performance, Ceccarelli not only claimed the title but also successfully secured one of the highly coveted qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship on Kona.
The race started strong for Ceccarelli right out of the water. While Austria’s Luis Knabl was the first to exit the swim in 46:29, Germany’s Florian Angert and Ceccarelli followed immediately on his heels. Once on the bike, Ceccarelli wasted no time in establishing his dominance. He quickly dropped the rest of the field, with only Angert managing to stay with him for a short period. However, by the 60-kilometer mark, even the German athlete could no longer match the Italian’s fierce pace and was forced to let him go.
Ceccarelli continued his solo masterclass at the front, building a massive lead over the chasing pack. By the time he reached T2, he held a comfortable five-minute advantage over his closest pursuer, Angert, putting himself in the perfect position to seal the win.
During the marathon, the battle for gold was never truly in doubt. Ceccarelli executed his run flawlessly, showing no signs of weakness and maintaining a steady pace to cruise towards the finish line. The Italian crossed the tape in winning time of 7:48:07.
Behind him, Norway’s Jon Saeveras Breivold delivered an excellent marathon performance to hunt down second place in 7:49:44, while Angert completed the podium in third in a time of 7:52:35.
