In what was actually a pretty boring World Championships Duathlon, Joselyn Daniely Brea Abreu took the win. She took exactly two hours to complete her 10 kilometers of running, 40 kilometers of biking and another 5 kilometers of running, but for the objective viewer it was a race to quickly forget.
In Aviles, Spain, the first run started very slowly, so a large group of ladies stayed together for a long time. After five kilometers – halfway through – the pace finally increased. This was immediately visible in the fact that many women lost their connection with the leading group. In the end of the first run, eight women started the bike part together as the leading group.
During the first few kilometers on the bike these women worked well together, but that soon changed when they started looking at each other. The pace dropped significantly and sometimes it almost looked like a fun ride. As a result, more and more women joined from behind and a larger leading group started the last five kilometers of the run simultaneously.
During the run Daniely Brea Abreu struck by winning the race. Ai Ueda came in second ten seconds later and Marion Legrand third 21 seconds later.
