The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced that there will be 11 medal events for Para triathlon at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, three more medal events than in years past. The athlete quota for triathlon will also be 120, 40 more than competed at the Paralympics in Tokyo.
The medal events will include: Men’s PTWC, PTS2, PTS3, PTS4, PTS5 and PTVI, and Women’s PTWC, PTS2, PTS4, PTS5 and PTVI. In terms of the athlete quota, the IPC has “confirmed 54 men (18 more than in Tokyo), 50 women (14 more than in Tokyo) and another 18 spots for invitations, with no gender pre-determined yet,” according to a release from World Triathlon.
“We are delighted with this decision, that proves that Para triathlon is one of the key sports in the Paralympic programme, and we keep increasing the number of events and the number of participants”, said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “World Triathlon was hoping to get the 6+6 Para triathlon classes in the Paralympics. Despite the efforts, unfortunately one of the female events did not make the cut to be included in the Programme, according to the IPC Handbook requirements. But we will explore all options to be able to offer an opportunity for female athletes in all sport classes to qualify for Paris 2024.”
The Paralympic Games in Paris will include up to 4,400 athletes who will compete in 549 medal events in 22 Para sports.
