Her Instagram post was simple: “Happy with the win at Trans Vorarlberg Olympic distance triathlon. Last race before the Olympics.” What that post doesn’t say is that Spirig, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 2016 silver medalist didn’t just win the women’s race, she finished fifth overall and just nine minutes behind fellow Swiss Olympian Max Studer.

Spirig finished in 1:54:54, just under five minutes ahead of Germany’s Lena Berlinger (2:00:51), with Austria’s Lisa Maria Dornauer (2:07:01) taking third. Studer, who is, like Spirig, coached by Brett Sutton, was equally as dominant in the men’s race, finishing in 1:45:08. Austria’s Martin Bader took second (1:49:33), with Germany’s Andreas Jung rounding out the podium in 1:50:06.
