It’s the news that nobody wants to hear just days before a race. Jelle Geens’ world just fell apart. After years of working hard for this one day, the Belgian athlete tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t be allowed to race the Individual event on Monday. Heading into the race he was considered a medal favorite. In the meanwhile, Geens got back a negative test too, but the Olympic protocol still won’t allow him to race in the individual event.

There is hope that Geens will be able to race the Mixed Team Relay, which takes place on Jul 31, 7:30 AM local time. The Belgian federation also sent triathlete Noah Servais to Tokyo as an alternate – he will race in the relay if Geens remains in quarantine.
