Riou and Lamastra take Europe Cross Duathlon Championships

There’s a huge weekend of cross racing taking place in Italy this weekend as Xterra Trentino Dolomiti Paganella and Europe Triathlon team up and host the Europe Cross Duathlon and Triathlon Championships. The duathlon championships took place today, with the triathlon championships set for Sunday. That event will be streamed live on Facebook.com/XTERRAEurope at 10:45am CEST. The men start at 11, with the women heading off three minutes later.

This is the inaugural event in Molveno, Italy, set on the shores of Lake Molveno in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites. The duathlon included an 8 km run, 28.5 km bike and a 4 km run.

In today’s men’s race it was France’s Arthur Serrieres who hit the first transition in 27:41 with a 30-second lead over countryman Corentin Lefer and Denmark’s Jens Sloth Nieslen. By the end of the bike, though, it was Italy’s Alessandro Saravalle who had moved to the front, but he only had a few seconds lead on Sloth Nieslen and Italian Giuseppe Lamastra. Those three would race for the podium spots, with Lamastra taking the top spot in 2:11:13, 23 seconds up on Saravelle and 37 seconds ahead of Sloth Nieslen.

For the women it was The Netherlands’ Diede Diederiks who was first into T1 in 32:44, leading Slovakia’s Kristina Lapinova and France’s Morgane Riou by about 40 seconds. Riou would go on to dominate the bike, finishing 1:50 up on Diederiks and 2:12 ahead of Italian Matilde Bolzan. Riou would hold off a charge from Diederiks on the run, winning the race in 2:37:39 with Diederiks crossing the line 24 seconds later. Russia’s Daria Rogozina would round out the podium, 41 seconds back.
