The news has not yet been confirmed by Ironman, nor is it the first country you think of when talking about a new Ironman to be announced, but according to several Rwanda news channels and newspapers, the African country will be hosting an Ironman race this year.

The news is being announced by The New Times, Rwanda’s largest newspaper, and national television station Rwanda TV, among others. The race should take place as early as this year – in August – and take place in and around Lake Kivu. It would be the first time Ironman has organized a race in Central Africa and the second race on the African continent after Ironman South Africa.

News sources report that President Paul Kagame has held talks in person about the race and hosted an Ironman delegation. Rwanda has been presenting itself as a more sporty country in recent years and triathlon has become increasingly popular. Around Lake Kivu, am Africa Triathlon Cup race has been taking place in recent years.
