Katie and Tommy Zaferes expecting first child in early July

Katie Zaferes wins the 2019 World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Lausanne, Switzerland

Olympic bronze medalist Katie Zaferes and her husband Tommy (an elite triathlete, photographer and talent ID coordinator for USA Triathlon), have announced they are expecting their first child in early July.

“We’re so excited and feel very grateful to be expecting a little one in early July,” Katie wrote in an Instagram post. “This life change has been such a learning experience. Many pieces amazing but also really challenging- and I know that is just going to continue. I look forward to this new adventure so much. The plan now is to focus on this little one, stay in contact with triathlon, do things I haven’t had the opportunity to do while training and racing full time and really just enjoy this period.”

Last November USA Triathlon announced that Tommy would be part of its high performance staff as the talent ID coordinator. We profiled some of Tommy Zaferes’ best World Triathlon photos here.

In addition to her bronze medal in the individual race at the Tokyo Olympics last year, Katie was part of the silver medal USA relay team. In 2019 she enjoyed a stellar season, taking the world title with an impressive win at the Grand Final in Lausanne, just weeks after a major bike crash at the Tokyo Test Event. That year, in addition to the win at the Grand Final she also took WTS wins in Montreal, Yokohama, Bermuda and Abu Dhabi, along with a runner-up finish at WTS Leeds. After racing just once in 2020, she had a tough time in early 2021 when her father abruptly passed away. USA Triathlon selected Zaferes for the team based on her previous performances, a decision that turned out well after her double-medal performance in Tokyo.
