During the swim and bike, Daniela Ryf competed well at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, but then the Swiss got tough during the run, dropping from fourth to an eventual ninth place finish.

“When you’re trying to make lemonade out of sour lemons, but all you get is vinegar.

“Tough day in the office. Simply not good enough today. My legs and lungs had nothing. My body seems not to be quite fully recovered from a nasty cold a few weeks ago. The positive I take out of today is that it was a good training day for Kona, and we still have some time to get fully healthy and fit.

“Congrats to Taylor Knibb for the world title. Simply in another league. Amazing and inspiring performance by Kat Matthews and happy for Imogen Simmonds to round up the podium of masterclass ladies.

I have 7 weeks to get it right.”
