After World Triathlon was forced to cancel the WTCS in Abu Dhabi a week and a half ago – expected severe weather threw a spanner in the works there – the decision has now been made to allow more athletes in upcoming races, in order to keep the possibility of qualifying for the Olympics in Paris real. Athletes can qualify until May.

After the cancellation of the WTCS Abu Dhabi, a number of athletes were afraid because there was immediately less of a chance to qualify for Paris. Shifting the WTCS Abu Dhabi was not an option and so World Triathlon started looking for a another solution. That solution was found in expanding the field size for some races, while not opting to add another Mixed Team Relay race.

Among others, the WTCS in Yokohama and WTCS in Cagliari will get 120 race spots (instead of 110, ed.) and the World Cups in Hong Kong, Chengdu, Huatulco, Samarkand and Wollongong will see 140 athletes racing instead of 130.
