Drones are increasingly being used during races to create some cool aftermovies or other footage, but unfortunately this sometimes turns out to involve risks. Last weekend, Liesbeth Verbiest paid a high price for this, because while the Belgian professional athlete was racing at Ironman South Africa, she was hit by a drone on the bike course and suffered cuts.

“When I was hit, fortunately I was able to keep riding straight and keep going, but I did sustain cuts on my arm and leg. How likely is that?” Ironman is aware of the incident and is investigating the matter. The drone reportedly did not belong to Ironman or Ironman’s media team.

Ironman South-Africa was won by Rasmus Svenningsson and Marta Sanchez.
