Ironman local event organiser SBR Sports and the government of San Andrés, Colombia, have announced the island of San Andrés as the newest host location of an IM 70.3 triathlon.

The inaugural edition of the Ironman 70.3 San Andrés triathlon will take place on June 15, 2025.

San Andrés, one of Colombia’s key tourist destinations, will offer athletes a unique racing experience on an ‘island paradise’. General registration for the 2025 IM 70.3 San Andrés triathlon will open on September 14, 2024.

“We are thrilled to see the expansion of the portfolio in Colombia here on the beautiful island of San Andrés,” said Joanna Jordan, Vice President – Managing Director of Latin America for The IM Group.

“This beautiful Caribbean community will offer a truly unique racing experience in an incredibly stunning location. As a hugely popular tourist destination in the Caribbean, San Andrés also offers a ton of experiences and amenities that will be sure to entertain athletes from around the world who come to race.”

Wilber Anderson, CEO of SBR Sports, which owns and will operate the new event, said “We are extremely excited to collaborate with the government of San Andrés to bring an Ironman 70.3 event to this special corner of Colombia and introduce this tourist destination to the international sports market.

“Promoting its unparalleled natural environment and generating a positive impact on the local economy by invigorating the entire value chain of the island’s tourism and service sector, we are convinced that athletes from around the world will enjoy the beauty and hospitality of San Andrés, making this a unique and unforgettable experience.”

The IM 70.3 San Andrés triathlon will offer participants a course surrounded by the island’s clear waters and scenery. Athletes will start with a 1,900m (1.2-mile) swim in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

This is followed by a 90km (56-mile) bike course, which will take athletes on two laps around the island, offering views of the Caribbean. Finally, competitors will face a 21km (13.1-mile) run course, consisting of three laps on a route with ocean views, culminating their journey by crossing the finish line on a red carpet between palm trees, with an ocean backdrop.

“For the government of San Andrés, it is an honour to host a world-class sporting event like an Ironman 70.3 triathlon,” said Nicolás Gallardo Vásquez, Governor of San Andrés.

“This event will not only put San Andrés on the international sports map but will also significantly contribute to the development of tourism and the local economy. We are confident that athletes and their companions will fall in love with our island and everything it has to offer.”

San Andrés is a small Colombian island located off the east coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean. Known for its white-sand beaches, coconut palms, clear water, unique cultural richness and all-inclusive resorts, the island is a part of an archipelago that includes Providencia and Santa Catalina and is also home to expansive coral reefs.

IM adds that… ‘The island stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for its ability to host visitors from around the world, providing a variety of experiences ranging from ecotourism to delicious Caribbean cuisine.
