Sad start World Triathlon Championships Torremolinos: two athletes died on first day of racing

While Spain’s Torremolinos is dominated by the World Triathlon Championships over the next few days, culminating in next Saturday and Sunday’s WTCS Finals, race week has started the saddest way possible: two athletes died today.

They are a Mexican and a British athlete, both of whom were at the start of the World Championships Sprint Distance for Age Groupers. World Triathlon is not disclosing anything else about what happened, so it is not clear whether the athletes got into trouble while swimming, cycling or running. The gender and age of the athletes is also not communicated. According to Spanish media, one athlete died during the swim while the other died during the run.

Just 10 days ago, things also went wrong in Spain; then a 41-year-old athlete died during Ironman Barcelona.
