Germany’s Wilhelm Hirsch claimed a spectacular victory at Ironman Brazil today, delivering a masterclass in pacing and endurance to come out on top after a grueling, race-long battle. While Hirsch took the ultimate crown, the day was equally defined by a sensational Long Distance debut from Dutchman Youri Keulen, who pushed the champion to his absolute limits, secured a Kona slot, and recorded one of the fastest Dutch times in history.

From the opening horn, Hirsch established himself at the front of the race. He exited the water after just over 44 minutes as part of an elite eight-man lead group. This group, which also included Keulen, Martin Baeza, Federico Scarabino, Ognjen Stojanovic, Fernando Toldi, and Luciano Taccone, set a fierce pace on the bike, riding together for the first 140 kilometers.

The turning point of the bike leg came in the final 35 kilometers when Hirsch and Keulen decided to break away. Demonstrating immense power and leaving the rest of the field in their dust, the duo managed to build a commanding lead of over three minutes by the time they reached Transition 2.

The concluding marathon turned into an unforgettable, high-stakes psychological thriller between the German powerhouse and the Dutch rookie. Keulen, showing absolutely no fear in his first-ever competitive marathon, boldly took the lead and held it for the first 25 kilometers.

However, Hirsch remained the epitome of composure. Refusing to panic, the German kept his rival on a tight leash, never letting the gap exceed twenty seconds. This tactical patience paid off perfectly in the final third of the run. As Keulen began to feel the weight of his debut, Hirsch capitalized on the shifting momentum, confidently seizing the lead.

Even after being overtaken, Keulen refused to fade, shadowing Hirsch just twenty seconds behind and keeping the pressure alive until the very final kilometers. In the end, Hirsch’s experience and relentless pace secured him a brilliant victory, crossing the finish line in a world-class time of 7:32:21.

Keulen crossed the line just one minute later in 7:33:21 – a breathtaking debut performance that instantly puts him among the fastest Dutch LD athletes of all time. France’s Arnaud Guilloux completed the podium in third place, finishing further back at 7:38:00.
