Fernando Toldi and Mikelle Coelho claimed top honors at Challenge Fortaleza, overcoming strong crosswinds and rising coastal heat to secure respective victories in 3:52:58 and 4:36:38.
The event, which formed part of the city’s 300th anniversary celebrations, drew thousands of professional and age-group athletes to Fortaleza’s coast for a grueling test in challenging conditions.
Toldi Strikes on the Run
In the men’s race, Diogo Andrade Villarinho set the early pace in the water, opening a 1:30 lead over a chasing group that included Toldi, Alexandre Nobre (POR), and Andrés Cendán Llorens (ESP). Villarinho held his advantage through the 90km bike course and entered T2 with a two-minute lead over Toldi and Nobre.
The dynamic shifted rapidly on the run as temperatures climbed. Toldi caught Villarinho in the opening kilometers and built a two-minute gap over Nobre by the 14km mark. Toldi held his form to cross the finish line first in 3:52:58. Nobre took second place in 3:57:54, while Villarinho rallied late in the run to secure third in 4:02:26.
“It was a great race, and I thought it would be a bit warmer in the morning, but I really enjoyed these conditions,” said Toldi. “I am happy with my first win here in Fortaleza. There were some strong crosswinds on the bike, but I gave everything I had to get the win despite the heat on the run course.”
Coelho Dominates the Bike Leg
The women’s race opened with Spain’s Ana Maria Santiso Prado leading out of the water, building a four-minute gap over Coelho and an eight-minute advantage over Elizabeth Nyitray (USA).
Coelho erased the deficit on the 90km bike course, riding clear to enter T2 with nearly a 10-minute lead over Prado. Despite Prado narrowing the gap to seven minutes on the first run lap, Coelho maintained her lead to secure the win in 4:36:38. Prado took second in 4:42:05, with Nyitray completing the podium in 5:16:54.
“The day was incredibly hot and hard, but I am very happy with my first-ever professional victory,” said Coelho.
