It was a tough call to make, but reigning champion Lucy Charles-Barclay will not be lining up to defend her crown at next week’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice. The decision isn’t due to injury, but rather a strategic pivot to channel all her energy into preparation for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, now less than forty days away.
Charles-Barclay claimed the 70.3 world title in grand style last year in Marbella, but 2026 has brought its fair share of hurdles. Following a quiet stretch dominated by injury recovery, the British star has steadily built back her form. She notched an impressive victory at Ironman Lanzarote in May before securing a runner-up finish at Challenge Roth in July.
Her recent momentum is undeniable – she racked up over 100 training hours during an intense four-week camp in Lanzarote. Ultimately, though, she has opted to bypass the starting line in Nice on September 12 to ensure she peaks on the Big Island come October 10.
“With just 39 days until Kona, I’m heading into the most important part of my preparation. I’ve gone back and forth on this more times than I can count, but I kept coming back to one question: What gives me the best chance of arriving on the Big Island at my absolute best?
“Anyone who knows me knows I’m a racer. Once the gun goes, there’s no 90% setting. Nice could never be a training day or something I simply slot into the build. It’s a World Championship, I’m the defending champion, and I’d go there to give it everything I have.
“That means tapering, travelling, racing flat out and then recovering afterwards all of which inevitably means missing key workouts, and with days I can’t get back.
“Ultimately, I don’t want to reach a hard moment in Kona and wonder whether I left part of my best performance in Nice. Once I looked at it like that, the risk versus reward became clear.
“Choosing not to defend a world title carries real weight. But Kona is the race I’ve built my whole season around, and sometimes being all in means having the patience not to race.
“I want to arrive on the Big Island knowing I did everything I could to be ready.”
