The brutal course of Ironman Wales turned into an intense, two-woman duel between Great Britain’s Nikki Bartlett and Dutch star Diede Diederiks, with Bartlett coming out on top to secure the title – and both athletes punching an early ticket to the 2027 Ironman World Championship on Kona.
Bartlett set the pace right from the start, emerging first from the water in 1:01:51. Diederiks, typically a weaker swimmer, stayed remarkably close with a 1:03:14 swim, setting up a head-to-head battle on the bike. For the first 100 kilometers, the two traded blows, never separated by more than 30 seconds while leaving the rest of the field nearly ten minutes behind.
However, Bartlett’s relentless tempo eventually wore down her Dutch rival. Over the second half of the bike leg, Bartlett pulled away, carving out a four-minute cushion entering the run.
From there, Bartlett dictated the marathon, constantly expanding her lead to cross the finish line victorious in 9:45:37. Diederiks held on for a strong second place in 10:07:15, well ahead of France’s Lea Riccoboni (10:14:08). With their standout 1-2 finish, both Bartlett and Diederiks can now lock in their preparations for Hawaii.
