A new race in Australia for Challenge Family: Challenge Canberra, as of 2023 (Nov. 26) the capital of Australia will be part of the Challenge Family race calendar. The race will take place over the Middle Distance.

Athletes will swim 1900 meters in the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin, then bike a challenging 90K bike course with a climb into the National Arboretum – offering magnificent views over Canberra – and a fast and flat final section before T2. Finally, athletes will run a three-lap half-marathon along Lake Burley Griffin, through the Commonwealth Park, around the Nerang Pool and across the Commonwealth Bridge. The finish line is situated on the Rond Terrace, where athletes enjoy views over Australia’s old and new Parliament House.

Canberra is a city of sport and in specific triathlon. The city is a considered a training hob for many athletes, who enjoy the city’s bike paths and running trails. Besides sports, the city has much to offer when it comes to museums, art galleries, cuisine, and even wine. Canberra is only a three-hour drive from Sydney, but it’s also easily accessible thanks to their own airport.

“We’re delighted to become part of Canberra’s long history of triathlon”, Jort Vlam, CEO of Challenge Family, says. “It’s a stunning destination, not only to race but also the training facilities are second to none – we hear Canberra is Australia’s most active city, and we’re looking forward to becoming an integral part of that community!”

“It is very exciting to bring back long course racing to the capital”, Race Director Corey Bacon adds. “Canberra is a great place to race and visit. We believe this triathlon venue and course will quickly become established as one of the best long courses in Australia,” said Corey Bacon of CBR Multisport Events and race director of Challenge Canberra.

Besides the Middle Distance, Challenge Canberra will also offer shorter distances and a junior event in the weekend of Nov. 26, 2023.
