The future of Ironman Lanzarote and Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote is hanging by a thread; after long and allegedly difficult discussions between Ironman and host Club La Santa, it was announced today that the 140.6 race will continue next year, but the 70.3 will disappear from the IM race calendar.
This decision is notable in several ways: first, because Ironman Lanzarote in particular has experienced a huge drop in participant numbers in recent years, while the 70.3 was sold out last year, for the first time in the event’s history.
Secondly, the decision is notable because Ironman has generally gone down a path of focusing more on 70.3’s and less on 140.6’s: recently, for example, the Long Distances of Mont Tremblant and Bolton disappeared from the calendar.
Ironman Lanzarote is scheduled for May 18. Club La Santa emphasizes that the 70.3 will be cancelled because it will put the focus more on the 140.6.
