It was well known that the relationship between Ironman and Club La Santa – the organizers of Ironman Lanzarote since 1992 – had been under pressure for some time. Today, it became clear that both parties are parting ways: after 34 years, Club La Santa will no longer handle the organization of the race. What this means for the world-famous event remains to be seen.
Club La Santa, a highly popular and well-known training destination for triathletes on Lanzarote, has organized Ironman Lanzarote since 1992. However, in recent years, more and more cracks appeared in the partnership with Ironman. In 2023, the event faced such significant pressure that Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote was cancelled. Rumors quickly spread that the two parties had not been on the best of terms since then.
Club La Santa will remain involved with the race for this year, but as of 2027, that will end. According to Ironman, the race should definitely continue to exist. Ironman states that “constructive discussions are being held with the local government and relevant institutions regarding the future of the event.”
Despite Ironman Lanzarote’s global fame and popularity, the organization has struggled with sharply declining participant numbers in recent years. In 2014, a record number of participants (2,097) flocked to the race, but numbers dwindled afterward. Following COVID-19, the race only managed to attract more than a thousand participants once, in 2022.
