The successor to Marisol Casado, who is stepping down as President of World Triathlon after 12 years, is Antonio Fernández Arimany. This was decided today in Torremolinos, making it clear that the leadership of World Triathlon will remain in Spanish hands. The elections had a somewhat remarkable twists, with several media even receiving smear campaigns directed at one of the candidates.
However, in the end Fernández Arimany won the elections, while Gabriela Gallegos (USA), Shin Otsuka (JPN), Antonio Alvarez (MEX) and Debbie Alexander (RSA) were named as Vice-Presidents. Leslie Buchanan (Canada), Bernard Saint-Jean (France), Caterina Vacchi (Italy) and Marco Antonio La Porta (Brazil) joined the board.
For Fernández Arimany, the appointment as President is a big honor. “I am truly honoured to accept this responsibility and to lead our beloved sport into a new era. This is an exciting time for triathlon, and I am ready to embrace the challenges ahead. Together, we will work to elevate triathlon to the next level, ensuring that our athletes, coaches, and communities have the support they need to thrive.”
Fernández Arimany defeated Michelle Cooper (Australia), Tamás Tóth (Hungary), Mads Freund (Denmark) and Ian Howard (Great Britain) in the election.
