Sport at the highest level is hard – or at least it can be – and with every great performance often comes at least as many disappointments. Normally American triathlete Sam Long is one of the happiest triathletes in the pro field, but last weekend he couldn’t handle his emotions after the PTO T100 Grand Final in Dubai when he was asked what it’s like to have to fight back, as he almost always does, after a bad swim. Long burst into tears and was then comforted by Sam Laidlow and Jan Frodeno.
Long came out of the water in last position in Dubai, but then advanced from 20th to 10th place during the bike and run. It earned him a sixth place in the final T100 World Championships standings.
