Ironman has released the first set of data collected by the RaceRanger anti-drafting system, which was deployed throughout this season’s Ironman Pro Series in an effort to curb drafting among professional athletes. Unlike Challenge Roth – where individual RaceRanger files were published earlier this year – Ironman has opted not to disclose athlete-by-athlete results. Instead, the organization shared a broad, event-level analysis.
Professional athletes will, however, receive personalized reports in the coming weeks, allowing them to review their own behavior in the draft zone. According to Ironman, those insights should help athletes refine their racing strategies – and potentially determine where, and even if, they will start future Ironman Pro Series events.
When Challenge Roth released individual data earlier this season, the triathlon world zoomed in on specific athletes who spent excessive time in the draft zone or displayed frequent “yo-yo” patterns – beginning an overtake but failing to complete it. Ironman has deliberately avoided fueling that kind of discussion, steering clear of public scrutiny at the individual level.
Instead, Ironman presented average figures per race and claims that there was 25 percent less drafting this year compared to 2024. How meaningful that claim is remains open to interpretation, as there was no RaceRanger system in place for the 2024 season and therefore no equivalent dataset for comparison.
More than 600 personalized reports will be sent to pro athletes, offering them detailed insights into their drafting behavior during Ironman Pro Series racing. What stands out most, though, is Ironman’s announcement that these individual metrics may factor into future selection decisions for Pro Series fields. Officials will receive each athlete’s newly created “drafting profile,” and athletes identified as having the highest amount of illegal time in the draft zone will be contacted for a discussion and an individualized improvement plan.
Ironman also published a table on Thursday summarizing RaceRanger data across numerous events, highlighting what they interpret as a significant reduction in illegal drafting compared to last season:
