The 11th edition of Challenge Turku delivered a masterclass in wet-weather racing, with Estonia’s Henry Räppo and South Africa’s Bridget Theunissen powering through rain-soaked conditions to claim decisive victories in Finland.
In the men’s field, Räppo set the tempo early, exiting the water first in 22:34 along Turku’s historic ship-lined swim course. He was closely trailed by a tight pack featuring Henrik Goesch (FIN), Gabriel Sandör (SWE), and Jakub Maliszewski (POL), all entering transition within ten seconds of the leader.
The bike leg saw a surge from Germany’s Jonathan Homberg, who worked his way to the front by the midway point and posted the fastest bike split of the day (1:56:54). However, Homberg’s efforts were unable to shake Räppo, Sandör, and Goesch. The lead quartet entered T2 practically side-by-side, separated by less than 20 seconds, setting up a straight footrace for the title.
Räppo made his move early on the run, reclaiming the lead just two kilometers in and steadily pulling away from the field. He took the win in 3:35:10, followed by Goesch in second (3:36:15) and Sandör in third (3:37:06).
The women’s race followed a different dynamic, defined by early breakaway tactics. Great Britain’s Jasmine Holmes led out of the swim in 25:02, closely shadowed by Maaike Vooren (NED) and Bridget Theunissen.
Once on two wheels, Theunissen took charge. The South African launched an early attack on the bike, opening up a 30-second gap by the 20-kilometer mark and extending it to 1:24 by halfway over the chasing pair of Holmes and Vooren. Clocking a field-leading 2:14:44 bike split, Theunissen arrived at T2 with a commanding three-minute buffer.
Unfazed by the damp conditions, Theunissen maintained her rhythm across the half-marathon to secure the win in 4:12:12. Holmes held on for second place in 4:15:12, while Vooren rounded out the podium in 4:18:15.
