Just two weeks before Jelle Geens aims to make history by securing a third Ironman 70.3 World Title – a feat that would make him the first man ever to claim three half-distance world crowns in Nice – the Belgian received a sharp reality check. Despite executing a strong and solid race, Geens was outmatched in a direct battle by Germany’s Lasse Nygaard Priester, who stormed to victory at Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun today.
Geens lined up in Austria to test his fitness one final time and build confidence ahead of what is unequivocally his primary objective of the season. That boost was only partially delivered. While the Belgian dictated the race for most of the day, he couldn’t hold off his German rival when it mattered most.
Following a fast swim led by Austria’s Tjebbe Kaindl (23:07), a star-studded lead group emerged together out of T1. The pack featured Kaindl alongside Wilhelm Hirsch, Fabian Kraft, Valdemar Solok, Michele Sarzilla, Priester, Johannes Vogel, Kieran Lindars, Geens, Rostyslav Pevtsov, Jan Stratmann, Morten Schmidt, and Simon Viain.
The demanding bike leg in Zell am See-Kaprun quickly tore the lead pack apart. Riders dropped off one by one until just past the 30-kilometer mark, when only Geens and Priester remained at the front. Refusing to yield an inch, the two world-class athletes pushed each other to build a massive gap over the field. By T2, Gregor Payet entered transition in third place, trailing the duo by 2:36. A chasing group including Trevor Foley, Kraft, Kaindl, Solok, Joran Driesen, and Damien Le Mesnager followed closely behind.
The podium’s bottom step was merely a sideshow to the high-stakes duel up front. However, once on the run, Nygaard Priester immediately showed he had the superior legs and endurance. In the opening kilometers, the German dropped Geens and steadily stretched his lead across the 21.1 km half marathon.
Nygaard Priester crossed the line to seal the victory in 3:43:29, sending a clear warning shot just weeks before Nice. Geens finished second in 3:45:59 and Kaindl finished third in 3:48:22.
