After announcing last night that the bike course at Ironman California would be shortened to just 90 km, Ironman has now announced that Ironman California “cannot take place today on Oct. 24, 2021.’

In a Facebook post on the event’s page Ironman explained that “weather conditions have deteriorated overnight and weather condition(s) are expected to worsen over the course of the day. We no longer believe that we can provide an acceptably safe swim and bike environment for our athletes.”

“We recognize that the change at this late juncture will come as a disappointment and are working diligently to provide you with further details and racing options,” the message continues.

Triathlon fans from around the world had been anxiously awaiting the race between defending Ironman world champion Jan Frodeno and defending Ironman 70.3 world champion Gustav Iden this weekend – now we’ll have to wait and see if the pair will face off at another full-distance race at some point this year.

Today’s race was slated to be a men’s only pro race. The women will compete at Ironman Florida in two weeks.
