As they enter the new year, many athletes look back on 2020. Switzerland’s four-time Hawaii winner Daniela Ryf looks back on a special year in which she traveled less, but learned much more, writes on her social media.

“2020 is coming to an end and, while it was a mentally difficult year for an athlete, I don’t want to complain and prefer to look back and remember what I’ve learned. 2020 was a challenge for me personally. Being trapped in a situation I couldn’t change, it forced me to look at things from a different perspective and gave me the time and courage to finish old projects like my food science studies and discover new things about my future, what I want and don’t want in my life. I could work on my swim, bike and run form and heal my foot without any travel, and I’ve built up training with more consistency than previous seasons as an investment for next year. I found the motivation to finish my education and discovered new goals, which opened my eyes for the future. I believe what I’ve discovered is the pure training and the process of getting fitter with consistent work, which is why I became an athlete in the first place and what I’ve always enjoyed the most and which still makes me happy. I wish you all a lot of positivity for 2021 and to build on the strength we’ve all gained in 2020.”
