It was an exciting day of racing as the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) wrapped up 2021 with the sprint distance race in Abu Dhabi – the men’s race was won by Jelle Geens, while Flora Duffy took the women’s title.

We take a look back at the racing through these excellent photos from World Triathlon photographers Wagner Araujo and Tommy Zaferes:

The race takes place at the Yaz Marina Circuit, the venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
They’re off! A very competitive women’s field dives into the 31-degree water.
Sophie Coldwell (behind) was first out of the water with Jess Learmonth right behind. They would sprint to T1 in the lead.
A lead group of five quickly formed on the bike that included Duffy, Learmonth, Coldwell, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Taylor Knibb.
Lucy Charles-Barclay couldn’t hang on to the leaders through the technical sections of the bike and did most of the ride on her own – she was sixth off the bike a minute behind the leaders and 45 seconds ahead of the chase group.
As she did at the Olympics, Flora Duffy ran clear of the rest of the women to take the win.
Georgia Taylor-Brown takes second after a brilliant run that pushed Duffy to the limit.
Vincent Luis led the men out of the water.
Luis and Mark Devay would have some time at the front …
But were eventually joined by 15 others. The lead group would come off the bike 45 seconds ahead of the chasers.
The race became a 5 km footrace with Geens marking every move …
Geens would pull clear with just under 1 km of running to go, taking a well-deserved win. (Geens was in great shape heading into the Olympics, but was forced to miss the Games after a positive COVID-19 test.)
