Challenge Family just welcomed a new race on their calendar: Challenge Puerto Varas in southern Chile. The Middle Distance triathlon will first take place on Mar. 20, 2022. Participants can expect a “picturesque lakeside town with iconic views”, as Challenge Family just mentioned in a press release.

Puerto Varas is often referred to as the city of roses – in Spanish “la ciudad de las rosas”– and has a lot of German influences as it was settled by German immigrants around 1850.

“Organizing and producing triathlons has been my passion for over twelve years, with more than 200 events. But organizing and directing Challenge Puerto Varas will no doubt be the highlight of my career”, Challenge Puerto Varas race director Juan Carlos Olavarría stated. “You have to come and experience the course and the setting to realize just how remarkable it is, plus the community here in Puerto Varas will ensure athletes have a race experience to remember – the atmosphere will be amazing!”

Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam continued to say that Challenge Family is happy to expand their race offering to more places in South America. “The terrain with its unforgettable views is perfect for a middle distance race and we are very fortunate to work with the experienced Juan Carlos and his team. I have no doubt Challenge Puerto Varas is set to become a classic on the South American triathlon circuit.”

Middle Distance participants will complete a 1900 meter one-lap swim in the fresh and calm water of Lake Llanquihue. During the 90 km bike part athletes will climb a total of 1000 meters, but given the rolling course, it can still be considered a rather fast course. And while biking, athletes can enjoy some amazing mountain views. The run has three laps in which each lap athletes pass by the lake, before heading into the city center. The finish line is right in the heart of Puerto Varas.
