For one year, Igor Bellido Mikhailova (ESP) and Jule Behrens (GER) may call themselves World Triathlon Junior Champions. Mikhailova won the race at the highest level yesterday and just now Behrens crossed the line first.
For both winners, their lead was minimal; Mikhailova won the race after 55:22 minutes, staying seventeen seconds ahead of Portuguese Joao Nuno. Just one second after that, Briton Dominic Coy finished third, in a race that was decided mainly during the run.
In the women’s race almost exactly the same happened. On the bike, a huge group formed and there was some turbulent riding; several smaller groups tried to escape, but failed each time. Behrens finally grabbed her lead after about two kilometers of running and she never relinquished it. She crossed the finish line in 1:01:01, seven seconds ahead of Sweden’s Tilda Mansson. Spain’s Maria Casals took the bronze at 16 seconds.
