Mathieu van der Poel made big headlines in triathlon news recently when he made a promise in a YouTube video of Average Rob to complete a Long Distance triathlon together. There was immediate speculation about when and where that would be, but it is now becoming clear that we need not hold out too much hope just yet. At least not in the short term, because according to Average Rob, this will definitely take ‘four, five, six or 10 years’.

The YouTuber reveals this in the ‘Lambert & Albert podcast’. “For a pro cyclist, it’s almost impossible to fit a Long Distance in. It’s for after the career or somewhere in a quiet period.” According to Average Rob, we can then expect fast times for sure. The cycling and running skills of Van der Poel are outstanding, but “he can apparently swim much better than people think. I think it’s a guy who can do everything well. A phenomenon.”
