British Triathlon is delighted to confirm Debbie Clarke will be its new Chair, following an extensive recruitment process, and will lead the organisation into its next chapter.
She will step into the role on 1st July 2025, succeeding the current Chair Bill James. Clarke brings a wealth of governance, commercial and leadership experience. She has led and built corporate finance teams at various institutions as well as holding a number of Non-Executive Directorship roles over the past eight years, including Chair of Triathlon England since March 2020.
Commenting on her appointment, Clarke said: “It’s a great privilege to take on the role of Chair at British Triathlon and follow on from the outstanding contribution Bill has made to the sport. I’m really looking forward to taking on the role to lead and guide the organisation, working with my fellow board members and the British Triathlon executive team to continue to transform and build on its successes, but recognising the multiple challenges and complexities it faces. As we move into our next Olympic and Paralympic cycle I’m also honoured to be able to also support our Olympic and Paralympic World Class Programme and our incredible athletes, as well as the development of future talent that is so important for our sport.
“Our greatest challenge, and opportunity, as a sport is to keep evolving, growing, and inspiring the next generation of talent. In my role as Chair, I’m looking forward to leading that journey.”
Ruth Daniels, Chief Executive of British Triathlon said: “Debbie brings strong leadership experience from the multiple roles she has held as well as a genuine passion for our sport and I know will lead and inspire our continued growth and success both nationally and internationally. Debbie’s appointment follows an externally run recruitment process which saw several strong candidates step forward and we’re grateful to Global Sports Jobs for supporting us through this thorough interview process.”
Bill James, outgoing Chair, commented: “It’s been a pleasure to have played a role with British Triathlon, I wish Debbie and the whole organisation all the very best for the future. As you might expect I will remain an advocate and supporter of our athletes and our swim, bike run community.”
Clarke took part in her first triathlon in 2009 and having caught the bug went on to qualify for the Great Britain Age Group team in 2014. She has since competed at World and European Triathlon Age Group races over a range of distances and multisport disciplines.
Clarke adds: “I really enjoy working with so many different people who are all passionate about the development of triathlon. Sport is such a power for good and brings so many health and wellbeing benefits. I would love to see many more people taking part, supporting, watching, and ultimately enjoying triathlon and multisport over the coming years.”
Outside of training, racing, and sports governance Clarke has run her own consultancy providing strategic advice to boards and has a portfolio of Non-Executive Director roles.
