In a move that underscores New Zealand’s growing stature as a premier triathlon destination, Tauranga has officially been announced as the host city for the 2028 World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Grand Final. The news, revealed today, is part of a broader strategy to showcase New Zealand’s appeal to the global triathlon community.
The announcement comes as something of a surprise in the race calendar though. While the 2025 Grand Final is set for Wollongong, Australia (October 15–19), and Pontevedra, Spain will host in 2026, the host city for 2027 has yet to be confirmed – that decision is expected later this year. Despite that gap, World Triathlon has leapfrogged ahead to secure Tauranga for 2028, signaling strong confidence in the venue’s potential.
The 2028 Grand Final is set to be the culmination of a three-year build-up in Tauranga. In 2026, the city will first host a World Triathlon Cup, followed by a WTCS race in 2027, ultimately leading to the crowning jewel – the Grand Final in 2028.
In addition to the Grand Final, Tauranga will also host the Para World Triathlon Championships during the 2028 Grand Final weekend. Exact dates and event details are expected to be released by World Triathlon in the coming weeks and months.
