Sanremo has always carried a certain magic in the triathlon world, with its Mediterranean backdrop, iconic cycling roads, and finish lines steeped in atmosphere. On 21 September, Challenge Sanremo 2025 will add a new chapter to its story, now unfolding from its fresh home in Portosole. The Middle Distance race promises not only a scenic course but also one of the most internationally diverse fields in the Challenge Family calendar, featuring athletes from 35 nations across five continents.

A Star-Studded Women’s Race

The women’s start list reads like a roll call of proven champions and rising stars. France’s Aurelia Boulanger makes her return to Challenge Family racing after a season of strong wins, including Challenge Sir Bani Yas. She’ll face defending champion Magda Nieuwoudt of South Africa, who swept three Challenge titles in 2023 and remains one of the most consistent performers in the sport.

Hungary’s Gabriella Zelinka, fresh off her Challenge Cesenatico victory, is also looking for redemption after her DNF at The Championship earlier this year. Home fans will be watching closely for Luisa Iogna Prat, whose versatility in both Middle Distance and Short Distance racing makes her a real podium threat on Italian soil. Completing the pack is Germany’s Sarah Schönfelder, back from injury and eager to build on her podium finishes at Walchsee and St. Pölten.

Men’s Field: Rivalries and Redemption

The men’s race is shaping up to be equally compelling. Germany brings two heavy hitters: Leonard Arnold, arriving with momentum after a long-distance win in Switzerland, and Jannik Stoll, whose emotional third-place finish in Sanremo last year turned him into a crowd favorite.

Italy’s hopes rest on Michele Sarzilla, who returns determined to erase the memory of a 2024 DNF. Kazakhstan’s Bogdan Kovalenko adds an international edge, with his top-ten finish at Challenge Samarkand signaling strong potential to upset the European dominance.

A Race with Global Appeal

From the United States to Japan, from South Africa to Pakistan, Challenge Sanremo’s athlete roster underscores the sport’s growing international reach. With over 50 professionals and a record 35 nations represented, this year’s edition promises not just fierce competition, but a showcase of triathlon’s global community against one of the sport’s most scenic backdrops.
