Ironman Barcelona has never been known as a race where drafting is taken particularly seriously – and once again, this year’s edition proved no exception.
Footage circulating on social media shows large packs of athletes riding wheel to wheel, raising familiar questions about the enforcement of non-drafting rules in Long Distance triathlon. Spain already has a reputation for lenient officiating when it comes to drafting penalties, and this event stands as another painful example.
While Ironman Barcelona offers one of the sport’s most beautiful and fast courses, its recurring issues with fair play continue to overshadow the performances of those who race clean.
