Yesterday, the triathlon world briefly seemed to stand still – or perhaps spin even faster – as news broke that the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has acquired a majority stake in Challenge Family. Beginning in 2027, approximately 35 Challenge Family races are set to become part of the new Triathlon World Tour. The announcement has sparked widespread discussion, speculation, and analysis across the sport. Now, PTO CEO Sam Renouf has released a video addressing the partnership directly and outlining the broader vision behind the move.
In the video, Renouf looks ahead to both the upcoming season and to 2027, when the PTO aims to expand its calendar from nine events to roughly 100 races worldwide. A key objective, he explains, is to bring greater structure and clarity to professional triathlon. The goal is to create a more unified competition landscape – one that is easier for fans, broadcasters, and newcomers to understand – rather than continuing with a fragmented system featuring multiple world championships and overlapping ‘title’ events spread across different organizations.
Renouf also confirms that the PTO is working closely with both Challenge Family and World Triathlon to determine how the Triathlon World Tour will ultimately be structured. Further details on how the new series will take shape are expected in the coming months.
