Kat Matthews Dominates Ironman New Zealand to Open Season with Victory

Kat Matthews wins IM New Zealand (PIcture: IRONMAN)

British star Kat Matthews delivered a commanding performance to win Ironman New Zealand on Saturday, launching her 2026 season with an impressive victory.

Matthews crossed the line in 8:28:55, breaking away early in the marathon to seal the win in dominant fashion. New Zealand’s Hannah Berry finished second in 8:35:43, while Dutch athlete Lotte Wilms completed the podium in 8:39:57, securing one of the four available qualification slots for the IM World Championship.

Early Swim Sets Up Lead Pack

The race began at a relentless pace in the water, with a strong lead group forming that included Fenella Langridge, Wilms, Rebecca Clarke, Berry, and Hannah Knighton. The group exited the swim together in 50:51, while Matthews started the bike leg in sixth position, 2:39 behind the leaders.

Matthews Charges on the Bike

As expected, Matthews quickly began closing the gap on the bike. Within the opening 20 kilometers, much of her deficit had already disappeared, and soon after she bridged across to the leaders as the front group had already thinned to Berry, Wilms, and Clarke.

Clarke was the first to lose contact, leaving Matthews, Berry, and Wilms riding together at the front. The trio worked efficiently through the remainder of the bike leg, steadily extending their advantage over the rest of the field.

By the time they reached T2, the three leaders held a margin of more than five minutes over Australia’s Regan Hollioake, with Danielle Lewis already nearly 13 minutes back in fifth place.

Marathon Breakaway Seals the Win

The race was effectively decided almost immediately on the run. Matthews surged in the opening kilometer of the marathon, dropping Berry, while Berry quickly established a gap over Wilms.

From there, the podium positions remained unchanged for the rest of the race.

Matthews continued to extend her lead throughout the marathon to secure the victory and begin her season in emphatic fashion. Berry maintained second place, while Wilms held off a late charge from Canada’s Tamara Jewett, who closed rapidly but ultimately finished fourth.
