The 2025 season of the World Triathlon Cup begins this weekend with an exciting debut event on the volcanic island of Lanzarote. For the first time, the Spanish island will host a World Triathlon Cup race, and the inaugural edition immediately features a strong international field ready to open the season in style.

Early-season competitions always bring a sense of unpredictability. After months of winter training, athletes arrive with different levels of race readiness, making it difficult to predict exactly who will hit peak form first. Nevertheless, several contenders stand out in the men’s race.

Spain’s promising young athlete David Cantero Del Campo is expected to be among the leading figures, particularly with the motivation of racing on home soil. France’s Dorian Coninx brings extensive experience and proven success on the international circuit, making him another key name to watch. The competitive lineup also includes athletes such as Antonio Serrat Seoane and Nathan Grayel, while competitors like Seth Rider and Max Stapley could play decisive roles depending on how the race unfolds.

The women’s race promises a particularly high level of competition. Luxembourg’s Jeanne Lehair and Great Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown enter the event as the standout favorites. Both athletes have established themselves among the world’s elite and possess the versatility needed to excel in sprint-distance racing.

Still, the competition will be fierce. Germany’s Laura Lindemann is a consistent performer at the top level, while Italy’s Verena Steinhauser and Germany’s Nina Eim are also capable of challenging for podium positions. Athletes such as Franka Rust further add depth to a stacked women’s field.

The race will be contested over the sprint distance, a format known for its fast pace and tactical intensity. With little margin for error, strong positioning in the swim and smart decision-making on the bike can quickly determine which athletes remain in contention for victory heading into the run.
