For the first time in the event’s history, Challenge Gran Canaria – taking place this coming Saturday, April 18 – is completely sold out. A nice field of world-class athletes is gathering to battle it out and see who will emerge as the strongest on the course.
Men’s Pro Race
In the men’s field, Italy’s Michele Bortolamedi enters as the heavy favorite and the man everyone will be watching. However, victory won’t come easily, especially given the tough nature of the Gran Canaria course. Athletes such as Nicolas Mann, James Teagle, Michele Sarzilla, Jack Hutchens, Damien Le Mesnager, and Thomas Navarro are all serious contenders for the win or a podium spot. One thing is certain: based on the rankings, these men are very closely matched, promising an open and exciting race on paper.
Women’s Pro Race
On the women’s side, Caroline Pohle is the clear favorite. Following a dramatic Ironman European Championship last year – where the results were adjusted several times – the German athlete finished second in the European 70.3 battle and starts this race with the strongest credentials. Megan McDonald and Justine Guerard appear to be the primary outsiders for the victory, though the vastly experienced Nikki Bartlett certainly cannot be underestimated.
